 Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Choose a reputable Studio?
In every city there are good and bad shops. To know which is right for you, you should really go to a few and get a feel for some different places. Ask people with tattoos you like, where they got it and if they'ed go back for another. Look at photos of artsit previous tattoos (portfolio) Do you like their style? If not keep looking. Talk to the artist and you'll get a feel for if your personalities match or not. Somebody making you feel comfortable can make for allot better experience than somebody treating you like just another piece of skin.Never be afraid to ask any questions from design changes or concepts to cleanliness practices. A good tattoo artist won't mind taking the time to answer your questions. Ask yourself too, how does the overall vibe feel? If its good, its probalbly a good place. If its bad... Allot of your choosing the right place falls on gut instinct. I don't recomend making a descision based on the cheapest price. If something is way less or the artist are willing to "make a deal" that means desperate for cash. It cost allot more to correct,cover-up or remove a bad tattoo than you'll save.

Are Tattoos safe? I heard I could get a disease from it.
Modern Tattoo Studios, such as here at Nikki's Tattoo Studio, take many precautions to prevent disease transmission. Everything used in the process is either new, disposable or able to be autoclaved. Our autoclaves are tested on a regular basis for effectivness. We use barriers on all equipment to prevent cross contamination between clients. We are inspected by Meck. Co. Health Dept. And have a permit renewal yearly. Please feel free to come in anytime and take a tour and have sanitation explained to you first hand.

Will a tattoo hurt?
There is some discomfort. It is applied by a rapidly moving needle which is penetrating the skin at a depth that is about the same as a dimes thickness. Most people find the first 5 min. the most uncomfortable. Then it just evens out. It is VERY bearable. It is EXTREMLY RARE for someone to not be able to finish. This has happened once in my career.

Should I self medicate or do anything to prepare?
Please don't take asprin products or consume alcohol before. This will only thin your blood and make our job take longer plus affect your color retention. The best way to prepare youself is to be well rested, well hydrated (water please, caffinated beverages will thin the blood too)eat a snack or small meal so your blood sugar is level. Doing these things will put you in a good state of mind which makes things smooth.

Is tip included in price
Allot of people ask this. No, it's not. It is not required or expected but is customary to tip something because its a service and if you feel a good job was done, its appropriate. If your getting large scale work over a couse of time-one tip at the end is appropriate. Again its not expected or required but very much appreciated. Allot of work goes into planning, resarching your art and laying it out and drawing it. We love it but it is work.

Basic Tattoo Shop Etiquette:

Is it okay to bring somebody with me to get my tattoo?

Absolutely, you'll feel more relaxed if you have someone

Familiar with you.  May I suggest you bring somebody

Who is going to be supportive & positive with your decision

To get a tattoo.

Is it ok to get work by another artist in the shop? Not my "regular" artist?

It's ok. We are not going to be offended

We wouldn't want to work beside another artist we didn't think did a great job

Too. We also understand schedules sometimes don't work out, or you just want

To try somebody else. It's cool.

Should I tip? Or is that included in the price?

A tattoo is a service. We realize tattoos are expensive and it is certainly not required but is always greatly appreciated.  A lot of expenses are associated with our art so a lot of what is paid to us goes back into assuring you are staying safe. Plus many times your artwork that is going to become a tattoo is created outside our work hours. Sometimes that tip makes us feel like going the extra mile for each client is appreciated. In situations where you just can't tip, just enjoy your tattoo and refer as many people as you can to your artist J

What if I don't like a drawing an artist does for me?

Tell them, be up front. Anytime a design concept is not to your liking or you just change your mind, say it. You will have this rest of your life.it's time to communicate. If you don't like our concept, we won't be crushed promise, we'll just take it back to the drawing board

I'm out of work sick, I think I'll use the time to get a tattoo?

Please don't be this person EVER. It happens every winter. Not only do we not want your germs everywhere, but if your immune system is challenged you want heal as fast. Plus cold med. Will make you bleed more.

Sun & Tattoo's

The sun and time are the enemies of your tattoo. The powerful ultra-violent rays (UVR) of the sun change fade, and destroy all it comes in contact with over a period of time including tattoos.

  • It takes only 1 hour of direct sunlight to ruin a new unprotected tattoo.
  • On a fresh tattoo (less than 1 year old) the sun/tanning beds can cause scaring,
  •  darkening of the pigment, blue can turn green purple into brown
  • extend healing times
  • Of course your tattoo will not completely fade away, but it won't look anywhere near as good as it could have.
  • Will cause blurring and loss of definition
  •  And most people end up paying to have the color enhanced after sun damage anyway. That can get expensive.
  • Tattoos look best on healthy non- damaged skin. They are under the skin once healed if you have to look through layers of damaged dark skin to see the work; it's not going to look its best.

Unless you're indoors, wear multi layers of clothing or in a totally light filtered area, sunrays are always present. Therefore the sun deterioration of color is always present. The ultra violet rays of the sun easily pierce through clouds and fade color. Even more so in tanning parlors where the effects of UVA and UVB rays are twice as harmful.

Sun block with UVA & UVB protection is the best way to keep your tattoo looking good for years to come.

These products are intended for use on tattoos 3 weeks old and older. Do not use on newer tattoos, permanent damage can occur
